Give yourself a sporting chance to cover all the bases as we dive headfirst into the world of sport-inspired idioms, exploring their meaning and background to give ourselves the inside track in the idiom race, allowing us to paddle our own idiom canoes and put a new idiomatic arrow in our lexical quivers.

Activating the Passive
By Anya Shaw

We teach the passive voice... The passive voice is taught...
Have a look in most coursebooks and this is how the passive is presented and practised. However, the challenge faced by students and teachers alike is not how it is formed or what it means but when and why it is used. In Activating the Passive, these key questions, implications for the classroom and practical ideas will be explored.
Anya is Director of Studies at International House Belgrano, Buenos Aires, where she has been working for the past 7 years. As DOS she runs the ih in-house teacher-development programme, and is also a Cambridge ESOL CELTA tutor. Before working in Argentina, she worked in Sao Paolo and Madrid.

Corpus Grammar: Have We All Been Wrong?
By Leandro Paladino

What is a corpus? What kind of information does it offer? How is that information useful? In this workshop we will answer these questions and more: as we get to know about new language findings based on corpora, we can often wonder – have I been taught wrongly? Should books be re-written? Is it that the language has changed, or is it the new ways of studying it that are revealing differences from traditional views on how English works?   Leandro Paladino is a graduate English teacher from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and is currently completing a Master’s in English with Universidad de Belgrano, Argentina. He is the General Director of NEL Inglés, in La Plata. Leandro has taught Language, Writing and Phonetics for over ten years, both in teacher-training college and on private courses. He currently teaches English Grammar II and English Language IV at I.S.P. Terrero, in La Plata. He has delivered numerous courses, workshops and seminars for teachers and translators around Argentina, on areas such as Spoken English, Language Awareness, Testing and ELT Management.

English Dialects Revisited: Language Meets Culture
By Leandro Paladino

This very practical workshop will review a number of language areas that differ from country to country, or region to region, within the English-speaking world. Not only will "standard" English(es) be reviewed, the thin line between what is right and what is wrong in language will also be discussed.Text, film and music will be used to illustrate the points – and to have a good time while we reflect on how the English language changes and varies. E-nglish for teachers
By Daniela Zallocco

As English teachers we sometimes feel our English is getting rusty, especially if we are not teaching at high levels. At the same time, we may not encounter that many opportunities to take immersion courses or attend workshops conducted by native speakers to "update" our English. During this session we will explore different websites that provide 2 or 3 minute activities which will help us work on our vocabulary and language skills. Are you ready to work on your e-nglish?   Daniela Zallocco is the director of "Creative Technology". She is a Teacher of English as a Second Language certified by Cambridge University (CELTA & CELTYL). She has completed a posgraduate course in Policies of Education (Especialista en Política Educativa) from Universidad Di Tella specialized in education and technology and is preparing her MA. She has worked as a Senior Teacher and ICT coordinator at ABS International and at International House Belgrano teaching children, teenagers and adults. She currently works in Ministerio de Educación de la Nación Argentina (Dirección de CooperaciónInternacional). She has delivered many presentations at ABS International Congresses for Coordinators, Directors of Studies and Teachers as well as the IATEFL - TESOL Congress in Santiago de Chile and was invited to present at the seminar "Technology, Innovation and Creativity in the English Classroom" at Universidad Playa Ancha, San Felipe, Chile. HOLLYWOOD ENGLISH Incorporating idioms and expressions used in Hollywood movies (and in real life)
By Pablo Ponce de León

As teachers, many of us have been brought up on the notion that education and entertainment are unrelated. And yet, in recent years many of us have embraced the use of entertainment (movies, music) as authentic content for our students. But there's another side to this: Entertainment is the single most effective content for us as teachers, in order to stay up to date and up to speed on idioms and expressions used in real life. The alternative being: packing our bags and living overseas for some time. So what if there was a ready-made, fresh Entertainment content portal that we could use to teach English to students, engage their interest and keep our language fresh. Well, wouldn't you know it? There is and it's called English Attack!   Argentine-American media professional. Highly experienced in the field of Educational Technology and Entertainment. Producer of Educational Media for: The Walt Disney Company, Google and Microsoft. Producer and Screenwriter working with Hollywood studios.

Regional and Social Variation in Spoken English
By Alejandro de Angelis

Can we still talk about British English as the ideal exonormative model in the EFL context? What about Indian English and many other World Englishes which have started to develop their own set of unique and shared linguistic features? Where does African-American Vernacular English fit in regarding social variation? In this workshop participants will be exposed to both linguistic theory, such as the purpose of the identity-communication continuum, and varied examples taken from the media to update their knowledge of regional and social variation in a fun way. Alejandro De Angelis is a graduate from IPPI (Instituto Patagónico del Profesorado de Inglés). He has worked as an English teacher developer for ten years, presenting his research on literature for children and adolescents at both local and international events. His work as a teacher trainer at IPPI includes teaching Language II, Cultural Studies and Diction I and II. At present he is coordinating the Cambridge ESOL department at Manhattan English Institute, acting as an online tutor at IPPI and working as a freelance teacher developer in Buenos Aires.

Speaking Conditionally

The Pleasure of Reading
By Bruce Thompson

Read. Read a lot. Read whatever you like. But don't work at it, do it for pleasure! We learn to read by reading, we learn to write by reading, we acquire language through reading. Reading can even help our listening and speaking skills. Reading is what makes the difference between the advanced learner and total mastery of a language. As Stephen Krashen says, reading is the only way. Come and find out how and why. Bruce is the Director of International House Belgrano and of International Training, the IH teacher-training centre in the city of Buenos Aires. Originally from Britain, he has lived and worked in Argentina for the last twenty years. Bruce holds a BA in English and American Literature from the University of Kent, Canterbury; the Cambridge RSA DTEFLA; and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Bath. He teaches post-proficiency literature classes at IH Belgrano and is a frequent presenter at conferences and exhibitions.
