Teachers many times occupy the role of mother-teacher. This trait often associated with a sign of teaching excellence, can lead to stress if we do not know how to regulate our emotions. On the other hand, parents, management, students and circumstances create a lot of pressure, and unless we know how to deal with it we can slowly, but steadily, suffer from burnout. Come to this session to learn about emotional intelligence, what burnout is, how we can avoid it, and how to be energized by teaching, and not burnt out! Join me in this practical and fun presentation to learn how to manage the stress of caring so you can go on caring, for many more years to come!

I am Not a Toy! The Challenge of Including G-learning in the ELT Curriculum
By Nick Perkins
Target: teachers interested in
G-learning
Theme: technology and education
Suitable for:
• Kindergarten teachers

The Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, iPod Touch and PC, mobile phone and Internet games are massively popular, hugely fun and are here to stay. However, in spite of a wealth of evidence to the contrary, many parents and educators still see them as toys, fads or “just a stage all kids go through.” At the same time, teachers all over the world are reporting that it is becoming increasingly difficult to motivate their students and encourage them to be active English language learners. In a world where many young people already have mobile phones, iPods, Nintendo DSs or Sony PSPs in their schoolbags, and even more have games consoles and broadband-connected computers in their homes, I, and many others, believe that the time has come to look at how to include these dynamic and engaging concepts in the ELT curriculum and help teachers reflect on how to best use them in and outside their classrooms.
Nick Perkins has worked in many roles in ELT (teacher, teacher trainer and ELT
manager). He has been based in Bogota, Colombia since 1999 where he managed
the ELT Department at the Universidad Externado de Colombia before taking the
post of Academic Development Manager for Latin America at Pearson Longman.
Nick has spoken on ELT related topics at major conferences and in private and
public schools, universities and other institutions all over South America, in
Taiwan and the UK. His principal areas of investigation are student motivation and
incorporating technology into ELT. Nick recently designed the Virtual Language
Resource Centre module for the Masters in English Language Teaching at the

for Tourism at the Universidad Externado de Colombia. He also hosts a popular

Theme: music and fun in the classroom
Suitable for:
• Kindergarten teachers
• Primary teachers

Kids need to feel that every class is memorable. Teachers as well.
Kids and parents need to know that the learning conditions they are undergoing
are influencing their learning process in the best possible way. Teachers
as well.
Kids love it when everything takes place in situations that
are familiar to them.
Teachers love that too!
Kids enjoy understanding even if they don´t
understand the language, because...
They feel it.
Teachers react positively to the material proposed, when
they see that their children have a total feeling comprehension during
their lessons.
Kids love it when everything is in English....and it must
be!
With words and Phrases often repeated.
With the helpful "Routine" of
a class.
With songs that aid
revision.
And within short , fast, colourful, amusing
situations.
